The Heritage of Linlithgow

Linlithgow Civic Trust is about to publish a completely new edition of its popular book about the history and architecture of Linlithgow, the last edition of which was compiled by Ron Smith back in 2010 (then entitled ‘Linlithgow: Architecture & History of a Scottish Royal Burgh’). Ron has completely re-formatted the book to match more recent Civic Trust publications and has included new features of the town and the history of several local facilities, such as schools and sports clubs, not previously covered.
The revised book title reflects the fact that the number of featured ‘buildings and places’ has been increased to 100. It now contains around 260 photographs (mostly new), plans and other illustrations, 90 more than in the previous edition. Alex Adamson has kindly updated his excellent historical introduction and, as before, there are full annotations to each image, an index and a guide list of the town’s buildings listed as of architectural and historic interest.
The book includes a foreword by Bruce Jamieson, the well-known and respected Linlithgow historian, in which he describes the publication as “an excellent, informative read and highly recommended”, saying also: “although I am fairly knowledgeable in local history matters, I have learned a great deal more myself about the burgh I have lived in for over 50 years”.
All interested in the town of Linlithgow are invited to subscribe to, or sponsor, the publication. In return for the advance payment, all subscribers and sponsors will be listed prominently within the new book, and receive a copy/copies as outlined below. There are three categories of support which can be given:
- As a subscriber, at a cost of £15 per copy (the retail price); or
- As a private sponsor, at a cost of £75 for which five copies will be supplied; or
- As a corporate sponsor, at a cost of £300 for which 20 copies will be supplied.
If you would like to order a copy or copies in this way, you can do this online. Please send an email to bbl.chair@lbt.scot with the following details:
- name; address (for delivery)
- whether you want to be a subscriber, a private sponsor or a corporate sponsor
- how many copies of the book you require
- how much you have paid by bank transfer to Linlithgow Burgh Trust (Account Number 16008960 and Sort Code 80-22-60, using the Reference HERITAGE)
- and how you want your entry in the list of supporters to be set out, for example, ‘John & Mary Brown, Linlithgow’ or the name of your business.
If you want to make the book a gift to someone, the intended recipient’s name can be listed as the subscriber rather than your own. Anyone unable to order online, please telephone 01506 670758 to request an order form.
In order to guarantee the inclusion of your selected name in the book, all orders must be received no later than 5pm on Friday, 3 October. All support for the publication of this book will be very welcome and very much appreciated!
